![]() ![]() so when the time comes it worth doing!ĭrive belts "look good" and fail all the time here on kia-forums. An engine and transmission with low miles (around 22k) can be gotten for under $1000 and thats about 99% of the drive train. We are sitting on 8+" of snow and the single digit temps make it not easy to do anything outside.Įven with 206k miles they are worth "rebuilding" when the get tired. Regarding your tip about the power steering pump, do you think I can just push the hoses out of the way or will I need to drain the pump per the instruction you linked me up to?Īgain, thanks for all the help, it is much appreciated. I believe that repair may be out of my league. ![]() I am not sure when it was last replaced, but I had it inspected a couple of months ago and was told it was in good shape and did not need replaced. Seems like there are a lot of haters out there, but I guess everyone has their stories to tell. It is the first Kia we have owned, and so far it seems to be a pretty good little car. This Spectra5 is at 206K and still runs like a scalded dog. Thanks for all the info, it always helps to have an idea of what I am in for before I get started. Doesn't sound like much but the timing was about as bad as it gets. 25 inches of snow, instead we are at about 2" and counting. Yeah, this may have been the worst commute of the year. Keep us posted on "your" tips or problems. That's about all your Spectra should need to These are really reliable and great cars "if" taken care of. ![]() Use ONLY NGK plugs.do not use "SPECIAL" design plugs as they WILL cause miss-firingĪnd cause CELs (check engine lights). Spark Plugs are a cheap way to improve gas mileage and performance TOO. Use Valvoline MaxLife Transmission fluid (rated for Diamond Type III fluid). Automatic transmission fluid should also be drained and replaced EVERY 30k miles to insure the tranny's life. Your Spectra can/will go 300k miles "if" they are properly maintained. I make this recommendation to ALL KIA owners of these vintage cars. Check their warranties on the belts (30~90 days for generic, Lifetime for GATES.although I still strongly suggest replacements by the book). "WE"/I recommend using "GATES" brand timing bellts and NOT the Advance/AutoZone/O'Reilly Brands. The Spectras have a timing belt and they MUST be replaced every 5yrs OR 60k miles.įailure to do so WILL result in MAJOR engine damage. I have worked on a few Spectras (family and friends) replacing the timing belts and found that the AC belts (made by BANDO) on all of them were badly cracked and near failure. This requires removing the passenger (left) wheel and a plastic "guard" (3 10mm bolts) and loosening a tensioner to remove and replace the belt. If you are working on the car inside I'd suggest replacing the AC Belt also. The alternator doesn't look to be a "big" problem.just a little time involved. You might want to unbolt the ps lines from the body to gain better access. The power steering pump you should be able to just move out of the way. I have attached two R/R guides from to help with the replacement. I "see" you are in Dayton, Ohio.So the weather has to be pretty nasty. ![]()
